The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
