Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to reduce the amount of AI-created content appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it now features over 1 billion content made with AI.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a global release. This development comes amid a surge in AI content, fueled by recent content generation software.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this material is classified as low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.
“We know from our community that many people like content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to give people the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own preferences,” stated a platform representative.
AI on the Platform
TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as made with AI. Overall, over 100 million media items are uploaded to the app each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small part of its total content library.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be able to reduce or increase the amount of artificial media they watch by accessing the “manage topic” setting in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter encompass current affairs, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its rules mandate users to label “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be deleted under its community policies.
Furthermore, the service will now add an AI-generated tag to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This step is designed to help prevent users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.
Educational Initiatives
The company is also launching a $2m awareness program for professionals and groups to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will benefit educational bodies specializing in teaching coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, amid controversy over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in Britain. The company is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its trust and safety team in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.
A senior executive explained that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by filtering out the most distressing content ahead of it gets reviewed by staff. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its AI tools.
“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s extremely critical to limit contact with unsafe media as rapidly, which is where a extensive automated help is really helping us work at speed.”
