Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Versus Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-game ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected call-up.
Performance Issues Lead to Omission
The right-hander was left out from the ODI team after being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.
The batsman has played 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia look for a solution to their top-order woes.
Bowling Additions and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from October 29.
