{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals crossed the track right in his path
The concerning event happened on the third circuit when track officials were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Official Investigation Underway
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the regulatory authority
"On lap three, safety personnel were alerted and placed on standby to enter the track and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send officials were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired after that point"
